General Note: The Table of Nations above is derived from Genesis Chapter 10. The sons and grandsons of Noah are bolded. Grandsons are marked GS, great grandsons GGS, and so forth. Ancestry is identified by the level above a descendant (e.g., Arphaxad is the son of Shem, Shelah is the son of Arphaxad, Eber is the son of Shelah, etc.).

Notes 1 and 2: A nation or people group’s ancestry cannot be wholly attributed to just one of the names above; intermarriage, alliances, and physical proximity have played a monumental role in the historical development of nations and races. Joktan and Havilah, among others, were both possible ancestors of the Arab peoples. Lehabim and Phut are ancestors of the Libyans (note that Phut’s nephew was the father of the Lehabim).

Note 3: There is not always agreement regarding which of the names above represents the original ancestor of the peoples of East Asia. In The Genesis Record, Henry Morris writes: “The Biblical mention of a people in the Far East named ‘Sinim’ (Isa. 49:12), together with references in ancient secular histories to people in the Far East called ‘Sinae,’ at least suggests the possibility that some of Sin’s descendants migrated eastward . . . It is significant that the Chinese people have always been identified by the prefix ‘Sino-.’”
