EPISTLE TO THE LAODICEANS

1

A purported epistle from the apostle Paul to the Laodiceans is mentioned in Colossians 4:16, although the original document has never been found. Some scholars argue that the apostle was not referencing a lost epistle, but rather a generally-circulated one, such as his epistle to the Ephesians. In any case, the pseudepigraphic letter here presented is from a 4th-century Latin text, which possibly stemmed from a Greek original. This Latin text is first witnessed in Codex Fuldensis, and it was included in Latin Bibles in the medieval period.

CHAPTER 1

1 Paul, an apostle not of men nor by man, but by Jesus Christ, to the brothers that are at Laodicea: 2 Grace to you and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 I give thanks to Christ in all my prayers, because you continue in Him and persevere in His works, looking for the promise at the Day of Judgment. 4 Neither do the vain murmurings of some upset you, which creep in, that they may turn you away from the truth of the good news which is preached by me. 5 And now God will cause that they that are of me will continue ministering to the increase of the truth of the good news, and accomplishing goodness, and the work of salvation, even continuous life. 6 And now my bonds are seen by all men, which I suffer in Christ, wherein I rejoice and am glad. 7 And to me, this is for everlasting salvation, which also is brought about by your prayers, and the ministry of the Holy Spirit, whether by life or by death. 8 For truly to me, life is in Christ, and to die is joy. 9 And He will also work His mercy in you, so that you may have the same love, and be of one mind. 10 Therefore, dearly beloved, as you have heard in my presence, so hold fast and work in the fear of God, and it will be to you for continuous life. 11 For it is God who works in you. 12 And do without a second thought whatever you do. 13 And [as] for the rest, dearly beloved, rejoice in Christ, and beware of them that are soiled with greed. 14 Let all your petitions be made openly before God and be steadfast in the mind of Christ. 15 And whatever things are sound, and true, and sober, and just, and to be loved: do [them]. 16 And what you have heard and received, hold fast in your heart. 17 And peace will be to you. 18 The saints salute you. 19 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with your spirit. 20 And cause this letter to be read to them of Colossae, and the letter of the Colossians to be read to you.
